North Shore commuters are about to join their Worcester counterparts with free Internet access on Massachusetts trains.

Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray said all Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority trains will have at least two cars with Internet access by spring 2010, with the first serving areas north of Boston going online Monday.

After a pilot program in Worcester, officials have a goal of putting Wi-Fi service on 258 of the systems 410 coaches.

The program will cost $1.4 million — much of it startup fees for equipment — but MBTA General Manager Daniel Grabauskas said he can recover most of the ongoing cost if 100 more people systemwide become regular riders because of the service.

The special cars are marked with a bright orange logo from AT&T, which won the bid for the service contract.
